How to Search a Name
- Open the Home tab
- Type the name into the search bar — don’t press search yet
- Open the Language menu and choose the language of the name. Not sure? Choose All languages
- Click Search
Reading a Result Card
Each card shows the name, a phonetic spelling, a play button, and the language of origin.
The language of origin is where the name comes from — not the language of the audio. Every recording is made so an English speaker can follow along.
What You Can Do from a Result
- Play the name at normal speed
- Turn on Snail mode to slow it down and sound it out
- Click the heart (or use the three-dot menu) to add the name to Favorites
- Switch between Card and List view under the search button — whichever is easier to scan
How to Save Searches
Know the person’s full name? Search with it. A more specific search usually returns fewer cards, which means fewer shouts used.
Good to know: A search with All languages returns a card for every language the name exists in, and each card counts as one shout. Searching “Sam” across 16 languages uses 16 shouts.
Names adapt across languages and cultures. Choosing the language associated with a name can help you get closer to how it's pronounced, but the individual always has the final say.
TL;DR
- Choose the language before you search (if possible)
- Each card shows the phonetic spelling, audio, and language of origin
- Use Snail mode to practice
- Full names + a chosen language = fewer shouts used
